Former COO of TUIfly and EVP Technical Operations at Austrian Airlines
Dr Burkard Wigger has more than 28 years’ of airline and MRO management experience. He was Chief Operating Officer of TUIfly Airlines in Hannover, where he oversaw the airline and maintenance operation.
Prior to this, Burkard held a number of senior airline operational and engineering roles, including Executive Vice President of Technical Operations at Austrian Airlines, Managing Director of Condor Airlines in Berlin and Head of Technical Standards and Operations Engineering at Lufthansa.
Burkard led a key project optimising heavy maintenance at an airline group, saving €7.2m annually. When restructuring Austrian Airlines’ Technical Operations and MRO organisation, he delivered a 20% improvement on productivity. Burkard led the ‘A380 Entry into Service’ team at Lufthansa, and also led the ‘Lufthansa Flynet’ project – introducing the world’s first internet onboard the Lufthansa fleet. Burkard has also overseen the delivery and redelivery of a significant number of aircraft, including the negotiation of return conditions and end of lease compensations with lessors.
Burkard is highly involved in a range of projects directly relating to MRO, fleet advisory, business performance improvement and financial analysis and benchmarking, such as:
- Performing a review of project management structures at a leading European Charter Airline
- Serving as an interim CEO/COO during a European airline group restructuring project
- Consulting on aero-political affairs for the TUI Group
- Consulting for a national flag carrier’s MRO facility in Asia on its EASA 145 certification
Burkard has received his doctorate degree from Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg and he was a lecturer at the Technical University in Darmstadt for more than 13 years.
